GrassRoots was conceived as a way of promoting ourselves through a name other than –LCC Second Year Illustration Students." By giving ourselves a visual identity we hoped to make a stronger impression on those who happened accross our work and to take a more professional stance when contacting potential sponsors and clients.
This project was initiated by student members of the class, independently of the college curriculum. After a general pitch and vote this design for the logo, which combines rigid helvetica with an organic illustration, was chosen for the official GrassRoots identity.

The first GrassRoots show was part of the Free Range Art Festival in 2006. Despite being first and second year students in a festival full of graduate shows, we filled the 10,000 sq foot T3 Gallery in the Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, with a veritable feast of multidisciplined creativity. Covering the floor of the gallery with turf, we sculped an indoor garden festival complete with a grass cinema, picnic rugs stacked with sketchbooks, clothes pegs holding prints on washing lines, original music performances by members of the class and a garden shed serving cold beer all evening.

The Grassroots website is a collaboration with classmates George Hurst and Sara Feio. As well as announcing our upcoming shows and events, the site also archives our past creative adventures and showcases our individual portfolios.
